Food Prohibitions

This text, spoken by Gyani Maiya Sen on February 19 2012, was collected and transcribed by Bhojraj Gautam, and analysed by Bhojraj Gautam and Mark Donohue.

It briefly describes traditional cultural restrictions on food consumption that the Kusunda lived with, which proscribed dairy of any form.

The first three lines are highly formulaic, and appear in many texts recorded from Gyani Maiya.

Note the gloss "N" given in the second line of utterance 3, and elsewhere. This is a morpheme which we do not yet understand, and so we are glossing it purely based on its form, not function. We hope to change this as our analysis proceeds.

The transcription "N" in the first line (the practical orthography transcription) of, for example, utterances 5 and 6, represents what was described as a 'uvular nasal' in Watters (2006). This represents simultaneous nasalisation and pharyngealisation of the adjacent vowel(s). It is not a morpheme in its own right.
